No Hawaii vacation is complete without a luau. Luaus originally began in 1819 as a feast to end religious taboos. It was the favorite dish at these early feasts that gave the luau its name. The dish consists of the leaves of taro plants and chicken, baked in coconut milk. However, luaus really took off in 1930s to 1950s with growth of Hawaiian tourism. Get a taste of real Hawaiian hospitality at a Luau in Oahu.

Hawaii is full of excellent luau venues; check out the best Oahu has to offer:

Polynesian Cultural Center – Voted as the #1 paid attraction in Oahu, the Polynesian Cultural Center features Hawaii’s most authentic luau. The show at the Hale Aloha amphitheater features traditional songs and hula dance surrounded by waterfalls and a freshwater lagoon. Be sure not to miss the evening show, Ha: Breath of Life. Over 100 Polynesia performers, special effects, and surround sound.

Magic of Polynesia – This is the “must-see” show in Waikiki; the Magic of Polynesia combines magic and illusions with Polynesian dance, song, and chant. This amazing dinner theatre experience is the most successful show in the all of Hawaii.

Paradise Cove Luau – A 20-year mainstay on Oahu, Paradise Cove offers several luau packages. Luau options include indigenous games and a hukilau ceremony. After dinner, the Polynesian revue-style show has everything from comedy to fire-knife dancing.

Germaine's Luau – This is a backyard-style Hawaiian luau. Dine on the beach under palm trees and the stars! Located on the west shore of Oahu, Germaine's also offers Polynesian entertainment for weddings, parties, and private events.

Rock-A-Hula® – Rock-A-Hula® is held at the 750-seat Royal Hawaiian Theater. Shows feature a large cast and concert quality performances with Hawaiian and Polynesian music, hula and fire-knife dancing… as well as a little rock n’ roll. Their new show “Hawaiian Journey®” spans from the 1920s to today.
