February 5, 2019 will be the start of the Year of the Pig, and there’s no better place to celebrate than in Hawaii. If you want to see just how to celebrate Chinese New Year in Hawaii, here are a few places to start.
New Year’s ‘Ohana Festival – Oahu, Honolulu, HI
A few weeks before the official new year on February 5, the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii will be celebrating with their own unique flavor on January 13. Events will include mochi pounding, taiko drums and lots of food and games to enjoy. Admission is free, so there’s no reason to say no to this excellent festival.
Chinese New Year Celebrations at the Ala Moana – Oahu, Honolulu, HI
On January 20, this special afternoon event will be at the Ala Moana Hotel in Oahu, and it’ll be perfect for seniors to enjoy. There will be a Lion Dance, calligraphy displays and a special appearance by Chef Martin Yan. It’ll be starting at 1:50 PM.
70th Narcissus Pageant – Oahu, Honolulu, HI
The Narcissus Pageant is set up by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii. Here, the ladies of the community are compete, and the Queen and her Court will be chosen for the Year of the Pig. This will be at the Hawaii Theater on January 11 from 8 – 10 PM.
Chinese New Year Celebration – Oahu, Honolulu, HI
This is Honolulu’s and Hawaii’s biggest celebration, and it’s open for everyone to enjoy. It’ll take place at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza between 6-9 PM on February 1-2, and it’ll include everything from fireworks to a gigantic parade, food booths and the famous Lion Dance to ward off evil spirits.
New Year’s Dinner at Little Village – Oahu, Honolulu, HI
From January 30 – February 5, Honolulu’s Little Village Noodle House is hosting a special dinner available by reservation. You can choose between an intimate group of four people or a large gathering of 10. Dishes will include Kau Yuk with Steamed Bun, a lovely winter soup with melon and San Choi Ba among other great foods. On New Year’s night, there will also be a Lion Dance inside the restaurant for you to enjoy.
